"I worked as a prison officer for over six years, and although I enjoyed it – I had been considering a career change for some time already. I’d never had a traditional 9 to 5 job or been able to take many weekends off before, and as a father to two young girls, I was after a better work-life balance. Dropping my children off at school had never been possible while working long, unsociable hours at the prison. Violence was only getting worse too, so when I came across the Recruitment Academy – I was quickly on board with the opportunity.

A lot of people wouldn’t even consider my CV when I applied for other roles, so the openness to people of all backgrounds was one of the hugely appealing aspects of the programme. Resource Solutions saw past the stigma attached to working in a prison and wanted to give people from all walks of life a chance to explore a new professional avenue.

What surprised me even more was just how many transferrable skills I has already acquired from my previous job. As a prison officer, I was often required to select a few of my colleagues to build a team that had the capacity to deal with crisis situations. Identifying potential, skills and desirable traits in people is what I do every day now too – the difference being that I can now spend more time with my family."
