Have your people skills pay off
After earning her degree in Politics and International Relations, Georgina joined entered the Graduate Scheme, and is currently working as an Associate Recruiter for a global banking and financial services client in London. Georgina shares how she is harnessing her people skills to build her professional career.
What did you think you wanted to do (work-wise) before you started this programme?
I was very open in my career interests before I found Resource Solutions. I didn’t have my sights set on a specific industry but I knew that I wanted to work in a structured, people-focused environment, that offered the potential to work abroad.
What parts of the client’s business have you been exposed to?
Working on-site has given me a well-rounded level of exposure, not only to the talent acquisition and HR side of things but the world of financial services. I am constantly developing my understanding of the industry that we work within and building relationships with lots of different people. I get face time with senior stakeholders speaking to hiring managers across the business and look after internal and external candidates daily.
What is the best part of the client brand you’re working on?
There is a focus on sustainable performance as opposed to short term wins and I have been able to participate in projects which are key to the long-term recruitment and candidate attraction goals of such a huge brand. The projects I get to work on impact the business on a global level which allows me connect with our people around the world. It’s been fascinating to see how my contributions have a real impact on the work we do every day.
What kind of skills are you developing during your time within our Graduate Programme?
My people skills are something I’ve developed very quickly. I’ve always considered myself to be a ‘people person’ but I have learnt how to handle different, and often delicate situations. We start out in a Recruitment Coordinator role to develop our prioritisation and organisation skills which are essential as you progress into an Associate Recruiter role as it gives you a base level of knowledge which I rely on every day.
Even after your formal education comes to an end, I think it’s important to keep learning. The graduate scheme focuses on developing essential soft skills which you wouldn’t otherwise get with your degree. It fast tracks your learning and provided surround support from line managers and colleagues who look out for you.
What is something that you’ve learned that you knew nothing about before joining Resource Solutions?
I knew very little about financial services and how the end-to-end recruitment process works. There is so much more to banking than you hear about in the news and I didn’t realise how the features of the recruitment process work together. It’s interesting to see how we all play different parts to make the recruitment experience as efficient as possible for the hiring manager and the candidates.
After being exposed to Graduate Programme and opportunities at Resource Solutions are your career goals?
The international mobility opportunities interest me as well as the genuine career progression. We are growing rapidly and we are at the centre of innovation in talent acquisition so it’s really exciting to be a part of that.
Close the candidate: if there was a grad right now who was thinking applying for the program what would you say to them?
The culture at Resource Solutions will motivate you to develop your skills and do your best work. Resource Solutions is different from any other recruitment company and the people you get to work with make the experience so worthwhile. It’s a global business that feels like a close-knit family.
